The 2015 LAN Culmen Rioja Reserva is by far the best Spanish red we've tasted in the last two months! In Wine Spectator's October 2020 report, the LAN Culmen was listed #1. This was above their Wine of the Year: Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 which is now being offered for around $300 a bottle! Amazingly, the Culmen Rioja Reserva was overlooked even though Bodegas LAN is one of the most important wine producers of Spain, on account of its illustrious history, and its omnipresence in the contemporary Spanish wine scene. Their Culmen 2015 Rioja Reserva is their highest rated offering in fourteen vintages. Unfortunately, we're down to our last ten cases of this amazing vintage. It's ready-to-drink with a few hours of air or can cellar for another 15+ years. If you can't get your hands on Wine Spectator's #1 Wine of 2020, this is a fantastic second option!
"Full-bodied and dense with flavor, this big red is a gentle powerhouse, remaining plush and approachable, with currant, quince, tangerine, cola and vanilla flavors, supported by well-integrated tannins and bright, citrusy acidity. Harmonious and complete, this delivers a successful blend of traditional and modern styles. Drink now through 2035. 100 cases imported." The Wine Spectator, 96 Points
"Graciano needs the right site," says María González, who regards it as a vital component of this blend with 89% Tempranillo from the oldest part of the LAN's Pago El Rincón vineyard. It certainly adds structure, colour and acidity in this comparatively warm site. The new French oak is well integrated here, complemented by layers of black cherry and blackberry fruit and aromas of wild herbs." Tim Atkin MW, 95 Points
